ROHS is an acronym for Restriction of Hazardous Substances and is often used when refering to the EU Directive 2002/95/EC
of the European Parliament and Council January 27, 2003 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. |
When will the the directive be in effect and enforced? |
As of July 1, 2006 all electronic and electrical products put on the European market must comply with EU Directive 2002/95/EC. There are no
exceptions for pre-existing inventory which means that manufacturers products must be compliant before the July 1, 2006 cut off date. |
Which hazardous substances are restricted? |
Lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls(PBB), or polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDE)
Article 4.1 Prevention |
What are the Maximum Concentration Values (MCV)? |
The maximum concentration values are expected to be .1 weight percent lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls(PBB), or
polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDE) and .01weight percent cadmium in homogeneous materials. |
What is an example of a homogeneous material? |
A homogeneous material is a single substance such as PVC (Polyvinylchloride) which is commonly used in wire and cable products as
insulation and jacket material. |
What type of cable products are affected? |
Any Electrical or Electronic cable with a voltage rating not exceeding 1000AC or 1500DC which will be put on the European market (member
states of the EU) either as a stand alone product or as a component of another product. |
Are there any exemptions? |
Yes. |
- Wire and cable with a voltage rating over 1000AC or 1500DC
- Large scale stationary industrial tools. A m
achine or system, consisting of a combination of equipment, systems or products, each
of which is manufactured and intended to be used only in fixed industrial applications
- Spare parts for the repair or for the reuse of electrical or electronic equipment put on the market before 1 July 2006. Per Article 2.3 Scope
- Lead, when used as an alloying element, in steel up to .35% lead by weight, aluminum up to .40% and in copper up to 4% by weight
- See the Annex for additional details.

Is there a mark or approval process required for RoHS compliance? |
No. By placing products on the European market after July 1, 2006 producers are declaring the product to be compliant with the RoHS
Directive 2002/95/EC. Therefore it is a "self declaration" by the producer. |
